Diving, 'Cockney Deep Sea', Malta, Oct 2013, ID 1498

HQ London District

In October 2013 HQ London District ran a sub aqua diving expedition to Malta. The ten day trip was based out of the Diveshack dive centre in Sliema on the east side of the island. A pre-requisite for attending was that all participants were qualified divers with the minimum qualification of BSAC Ocean Diver or equivalent. Fifteen persons attended the expedition, broken down into two groups based on qualifications and experience. For the novice divers a BSAC Sports Diver Course was taught; those divers who already had this qualification undertook the BSAC Twin Tanks Skills Development Course.

Diving equipment was drawn from Loan Pool stores at Bicester, and additional equipment and support were provided by the dive centre. After some shake-out dives from the shore, wreck dives were conducted from boats along the eastern side of the Island. Due to its rich history and accessible wrecks in relatively shallow water, Malta has some of the best wreck diving in the world. Some of the highlights included -

- The Bristol Blenheim Bomber known to be the only one of its kind the world. The RAF aircraft was ditched in the sea after being damaged by a German aircraft in December 1941. It is well preserved for a 66 year old wreck - the engine, wings, pilot seat and propeller are all still intact.

- The Imperial Eagle and Jesus of Oawra statue. A 43 meter long ferry which sailed between Malta and the Island of Gozo together with a 3 meter, 13 ton statue of Jesus. Originally sunk, and blessed, by the Pope John Paul II near St Paul's Island in 1990, then moved here in 2000.

The diving was interesting, challenging and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thanks go out to the Ulysses Trust for their support.
